This course focuses on the roles and responsibilities of persons providing care for infants during the newborn period. Physical, psychosocial, cognitive and family development characteristics of the newborn are discussed. How the body systems of the newborn learn to adapt and live outside the mother's body and health risks during the newborn period are examined in relationship to assessment and interventions necessary to prevent illness and complications during the newborn period. Basic caregiver skills discussed include bathing, hygiene, care of the umbilical cord, vital signs, growth measurements and support during the breastfeeding process.
